چکیده

In a three year study, IOOderate and severe root pruning just before planting was compared to no root pruning, on two size classes of seedlings (smaller and larger than average). Seedlings were bar planted in holes the full depth of the planting bar blade. For the smaller seedlings, survival was 1.0 percentage point higher for moderate pruning and 5.6 points lower for severe pruning compared to unpruned seedlings. For the larger seedlings, survival was 3.8 points lower for moderate pruning and 7.9 points lower for severe pruning compared to unpruned seedlings. Shallow planting of severely pruned seedlings was also tested in the third year of the study and, compared to deep planting, shallow planting greatly reduced survival. Root pruning had litrle effect on the growth of surviving seedlings.

Effects of Top-pruning on Survival of Southern Pines and Hardwoods

-Two schools of thought exist regarding top-pruning bareroot seedlings. One school favors top-pruning due to the economic advantages. Top-pruning can reduce the production of cull seedlings (increase crop value) as well as increase the chance of survival after outplanting. Published studies suggest that top-pruning can increase overall survival of loblolly pine and longleaf pine by 7 and 13 per...

Effects of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria on Loblolly and Slash Pine Seedlings

Loblolly and slash pine seed were inoculated at sowing with 1 of 12 different strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the greenhouse. Time to germination and seedling densities were determined at 21 days, and seedling biomass was measured at 12 wk after sowing. All bacterial strains significantly increased the speed of seedling emergence over nontreated pine seed. By 12 wk, ho...

Responses of loblolly pine, sweetgum and crab grass roots to l

nitrogen and soil water were studied in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings grown in monoculture and in competition with sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) or crab grass (Digitaria spp.). Rhizotron cells were maintained at high soil water availability (approximately −0.1 MPa) or subjected to three dry-down cycles to low soil water availability (approximately −1.0 MPa), over two growing ...

Root growth and hydraulic conductivity of southern pine seedlings in response to soil temperature and water availability after planting

Comparison of the root system growth and water transport of southern pine species after planting in different root-zone environments is needed to guide decisions regarding when, and what species to plant. Evaluation of how seed source affects root system responses to soil conditions will allow seed sources to be matched to planting conditions. The root growth and hydraulic conductivity of three...
